Starlight

Artist: Sara Crawley, United States
Artist Statement: This was done in a Nova Trio sketchbook that I was given. I love it! The fact I get to pick from three different colored pages is fun. This art piece was inspired by several things: my joy of playing video games, stargazing, and coats.

As always I started out in pencil and ended it with ink. That was until my boyfriend asked if I was going to use gouache to paint it in. The answer after that was yes, because it was a great idea! [Ed: Because gouache is opaque, it is a great medium for toned paper] Which meant I had to go over my original ink outlines with the gouache, whoops. The end results are better than I thought they would be! I left the background grey so the character and colors could pop off the page.

MEDIA: Gouache, ink, gel pen
SURFACE: Nova Series – Heavyweight – 150 gsm – Grey – Medium Grain
