Australia Poinsettia

Melbourne artist Jodi Wiley sent us this holiday drawing we’d like to share. “I sketched this festive Poinsettia from life over a morning coffee in a local cafe. I completed it in my Stillman & Birn Gamma Series journal on a page I pre-washed with Winsor & Newton watercolour. I used a PITT artist pen for the foliage and pot outlines. Once I’d completed the initial sketch I used hatching to create form on the pot. I then loosely filled in a few leaves with my ZIG calligraphy pen to create a bit of tone and depth, before blocking in the cast shadow at the bottom of the page.

Finally I splashed on some watercolour to suggest the red of the bracts. Then flicked my brush against my finger to create the splotches – I always have fun doing that.

You can see the early stages of this drawing on my blog: http://artbywiley.blogspot.com.au/ and I have a page here where I regularly post sketches: https://www.facebook.com/artbywiley

I’m new to the Stillman & Birn brand as it’s only fairly recently started to be distributed in Australia. I’m an instant fan. This journal is beautiful to work in. The pages take light washes well and the sturdy hardback cover feels beautiful to hold and use.”
