Portrait in Blue

German art instructor Albert Müllenborn recently sent us this monochromatic portrait and summary. “While sketching, I usually try to catch the atmosphere. Always directly on location. Because things must often go quickly, I draw in my sketchbook without using pencil, directly with fountain pen or brush pen. In doing so there’s hardly room for correction, yet that is what makes spontaneous drawing appealing to me. Therefore, my sketchbook contains more and less good results in a visual context which is documented on my blog  I publish almost all sketches — also the ones that didn’t turn out that well. That helps me to document my progression.

Finally, I have found a great watercolour sketchbook in A5 portrait format. I have spent a long time looking for it. In Germany watercolour books of this quality and size are available in landscape format only.

My Stillman & Birn sketchbook from the Beta Series is hardbound and has a handy size of 14 x 21,6 cm (5.5” x 8.5”). The book with 52 pages comfortably fits in my drawing bag. Last but not least the paper has an excellent quality for watercolour: cold-pressed, almost white, fine granulation and high grammage. After working with this sketchbook for some time, I am very impressed with its quality and will recommend it to my colleagues.”
