Hither, Thither and Yon

German architect and watercolor artist Florian Afflerbach sent us this report from Barcelona: “This sketch was done during Barry Jackson’s workshop, on Placa Universitat, Barcelona near the hosting location of the 2013 Urban Sketching Symposium. The workshop was called “Hither, Thither and Yon” and was about different layers of privacy and operating distances of the sketcher.

The question was how to transform these layers into your sketch. At first, I did a preliminary sketch that included these layers. Then I tried to put the information from the preliminary sketch into a larger drawing, which meant for me to also sketch the surroundings of the building, like the background and the foreground objects (which is quite unusual for me). I treated them as layers of importance. I used my new Stillman & Birn Zeta Series wirebound sketchbook for the drawing. First, I did the pencil strokes with a 2B pencil and later added several watercolour washes. The Zeta Series is very good for heavy watercolour washes because of the thickness of the paper. In the end, I added the USK Barcelona seal.”
