At the High Line

The High Line is a unique New York experience, a 1-mile linear park built on an unused elevated section of railroad tracks. The High Line sits atop the trendiest sections of Manhattan, from the Meatpacking District through Chelsea. Here is a photo which shows what a special place this is:

Illustrator Paul Heaston recently visited New York and created this drawing of a promenade section of the High Line. Paul writes, “I sketched lightly in 6H pencil first before going in with a Staedtler 0.3 Pigment Liner. For whatever reason I typically work left to right without a set idea of how much of a particular scene is going to show up on the page. For me the verticality of New York and the omnipresent construction seems to really lend itself to black and white line work. The High Line especially seems to showcase New York’s mix of historic and industrial with new and modern designs, and it’s now among my most favorite places to sketch.”
